~ solarlatinclub

The trio’s artistic methods may have initially emerged as a creative response to the isolation and uncertainty of that time, but such was the potential and sheer enjoyment of their collaboration, all three were keen to continue with their exciting exploration of imagined digital worlds even as the ‘real’ world tentatively began to reopen across 2021. Algorithmic Quotidian continues with Motherboard Pinball’s futuristic themes but sees Kuster, Ferrari, and Byrne take a noticeable musical step forward whilst retaining a recognisable band sound and identity. Open-eared fans of artists/bands such as Aphex Twin, Autechre, John Zorn, The Comet is Coming, Anna Meredith, or Kid A era Radiohead will find plenty here to enjoy. ~ bandcamp

Dizzy Gillespie trumpet; Charlie Parker saxophone; Sonny Rollins saxophone; Thelonious Monk piano >>>>>>> John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie (/ɡɪˈlɛspi/; October 21, 1917 – January 6, 1993) was an American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, composer, educator and singer. He was a trumpet virtuoso and improviser, building on the virtuosic style of Roy Eldridge but adding layers of harmonic and rhythmic complexity previously unheard in jazz. His combination of musicianship, showmanship, and wit made him a leading popularizer of the new music called bebop. His beret and horn-rimmed spectacles, scat singing, bent horn, pouched cheeks, and light-hearted personality provided one of bebop's most prominent symbols. In the 1940s, Gillespie, with Charlie Parker, became a major figure in the development of bebop and modern jazz. He taught and influenced many other musicians, including trumpeters Miles Davis, Jon Faddis, Fats Navarro, Clifford Brown, Arturo Sandoval, Lee Morgan, and Chuck Mangione, and balladeer Johnny Hartman. He pioneered Afro-Cuban jazz and won several Grammy Awards.[8] Scott Yanow wrote, "Dizzy Gillespie's contributions to jazz were huge. One of the greatest jazz trumpeters of all time, Gillespie was such a complex player that his contemporaries ended up being similar to those of Miles Davis and Fats Navarro instead, and it was not until Jon Faddis's emergence in the 1970s that Dizzy's style was successfully recreated. Gillespie is remembered, by both critics and fans alike, as one of the greatest jazz trumpeters of all time". ~ wikipedia

Matthias Schriefl brass instruments, accordeon; Sarah Buechi vocals; Johannes Bär trombone, tuba, beat box, percussion; Mathilde Vendramin or Susanne Paul cello >>>>>>> Those who move through big cities rarely experience silence. Today, the ringing of our cell phones, alarm bells, break bells and Zen apps set the pace in life, while the ringing of churches is barely noticeable in the noise of everyday life. The church bells - in the center of every town, every village, every person - have been the metronomes for centuries, according to whose rhythm life danced. * The ringing of bells is deeply rooted in the soul of mankind, as their sound has accompanied and structured them since ancient times. In a time of upheaval, which the year '20 has heralded aggressively, Matthias Schriefl deliberately wants to devote himself to the powerful and varied sounds of different bells. In his compositions there will be a lot of rhythmic complexities to be heard, which characterize bells especially in Central Europe, but with a complex groove level underneath, which is hidden in every bell ringing in Central Europe. The overtones of the bells are made tangible, something that has always been felt, but has never been heard with such clarity. Often triads come out in a single bell. Thanks to the excellent line-up and instrumentation of this quartet, the colorful network of sounds is equalized and developed further. The pieces and melodies then morph from the transcriptions of the bells into extensive solos by the four musicians. The program leads the audience from a pilgrimage church in his home village in South Bavaria, with only four harmonious bells, to gigantic peals, such as that of the Cologne Cathedral or the Konstanz Minster. If possible, the on-site bells are also integrated interactively. Johannes Bär and Matthias Schriefl operate all brass instruments and alphorns in a variety of ways. Susanne Paul is an extremely versatile virtuoso on her five-sided cello. Sarah Büchi has an incredible flexibility and rhythmic versatility with her voice. With profound compositions, the quartet revives the ancient symbol and ritual of ringing bells. ~ schriefl.eu

Álvaro Torres piano; Joel Illerhag bass; Kresten Osgood drums >>>>>>> Years of study and travel are blessings not afforded to many. It is precious when the results of these blessings are channeled by an artist into genuine and heartfelt statements. For pianist/composer Álvaro Torres, globetrotting and absorbing musical information from around the world has led him to the root of music’s importance to him, namely emotional expression. Torres’s new recording, Heart Is The Most Important Ingredient, provides a perfect example of the pianist’s affecting art. Torres began his classical piano study early in his hometown of Madrid, Spain. As a teenager, he discovered jazz and improvisation. After graduating from the Centro Integrado de Música Padre Antonio Soler, Torres moved to Nepal where he studied Hindustani music and taught at the Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory. He then went to Barcelona where he studied at the Conservatori del Liceu, staying in Barcelona for six years. An exchange program allowed Torres to attend the University of North Texas, and a European Jazz Masters program, through an AIE scholarship, provided a six month stay in Copenhagen, Denmark. Though Torres discovered free improvisation in Barcelona, it was in Copenhagen that he met drummer and scene booster Kresten Osgood. The ever-busy Osgood introduced Torres to an incredibly active and creative improvisation scene and opened the pianist’s eyes to a number of different musical philosophies and practices. The sound Torres’s had been trying to cultivate really began to come together in Copenhagen. The pianist had been negotiating his shared interests in classical music, jazz and improvised music. In 2019, Torres released a trio recording, Specious Present, that was a tribute to the music of Paul and Carla Bley, utilizing brief compositional ideas to build improvisations around. In Copenhagen, Torres recruited Osgood and Swedish bassist/inventor Joel Illerhag to record a collection of loose tunes and improvisations in January 2020. The work that the trio put down shows the evolution of Torres’s music, stylistically and emotionally. Amazed at the quick absorption of his music by the Scandinavian rhythm section, Torres trusted them to provide fresh points of view for his compositions without unnecessary direction. The recording begins with “Krescendo,” a dedication to Osgood that puts his hard-driving percussion against a layer of impressionistic piano and bass. The warm “Heart” is a patient piece that develops a simple, short melody into a thoughtful play of tones. Osgood’s brash drums introduce the brightly hued “The Good Life,” an Ornette Colemanesque, swinging piece that exudes joy. Illerhag’s resonant pizzicato bass provides the tonal center for the mysterious and spare “Most,” while the bassist’s bow work and Osgood’s off-kilter percussion provide a haunting backdrop for Torres on the fully improvised “Taken.” “Granted” is a sprightly played solo piano piece by Torres which leads to the elastically metered “Desire,” where textures and intensity shape a dramatic performance. The quietly tumultuous “Departure,” which continually churns and builds, was the first piece the trio recorded. The short, hectic head of “Ingredient” takes its cues from Carla Bley and is a change of pace from some of the moodier improvisational pieces. The recording concludes with “Dreams In Music,” a solo piano piece that plays around with a brief musical idea, inspired by Torres’s own dreams, where he can have full, meaningful conversations using music alone. Though he is now based in New York City, Álvaro Torres’s time in Copenhagen was foundational in his development as a musician. It provided him with inspiration and fantastic partnerships with Kresten Osgood and Joel Illerhag, which generated his sincere and fantastically played recording, Heart Is The Most Important Ingredient. ~ bandcamp.com

Info:
Gerald Joseph “Gerry” Mulligan (April 6, 1927 – January 20, 1996) from Queens, NY was an American jazz baritone saxophonist, composer and arranger. Mulligan started on the piano before learning clarinet and the various saxophones. His initial reputation was as an arranger. In 1944 he wrote charts for Johnny Warrington's radio band and soon was making contributions to the books of Tommy Tucker and George Paxton. He moved to New York in 1946 and joined Gene Krupa's Orchestra as a staff arranger; his most notable chart was "Disc Jockey Jump." The rare times he played with Krupa's band was on alto and the same situation existed when he was with Claude Thornhill in 1948. Gerry Mulligan's first notable recorded work on baritone was with Miles Davis' Birth of the Cool nonet (1948-50) but once again his arrangements ("Godchild," "Darn That Dream" and three of his originals "Jeru," "Rocker" and "Venus de Milo") were more significant than his short solos. Mulligan spent much of 1949 writing for Elliot Lawrence's orchestra and playing anonymously in the saxophone section. It was not until 1951 that he began to get a bit of attention for his work on baritone. Mulligan recorded with his own nonet for Prestige, displaying an already recognizable sound. After he traveled to Los Angeles, he wrote some arrangements for Stan Kenton (including "Youngblood," "Swing House" and "Walking Shoes"), worked at the Lighthouse and then gained a regular Monday night engagement at the Haig. Around this time Mulligan realized that he enjoyed the extra freedom of soloing without a pianist. He jammed with trumpeter Chet Baker and soon their magical rapport was featured in his piano-less quartet. The group caught on quickly in 1952 and made both Mulligan and Baker into stars. A drug bust put Mulligan out of action and ended that quartet but, when he was released from jail in 1954, Mulligan began a new musical partnership with valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer that was just as successful. Trumpeter Jon Eardley and Zoot Sims on tenor occasionally made the group a sextet and in 1958 trumpeter Art Farmer was featured in Mulligan's Quartet. Being a very flexible player with respect for other stylists, Mulligan went out of his way to record with some of the great musicians he admired. At the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival he traded off with baritonist Harry Carney on "Prima Bara Dubla" while backed by the Duke Ellington Orchestra, and during 1957-60 he recorded separate albums with Thelonious Monk, Paul Desmond, Stan Getz, Ben Webster and Johnny Hodges. Mulligan played on the classic Sound of Jazz television special in 1958 and appeared in the movies I Want to Live and The Subterraneans. During 1960-64 Mulligan led his Concert Jazz Band which gave him an opportunity to write, play baritone and occasionally double on piano. The orchestra at times included Brookmeyer, Sims, Clark Terry and Mel Lewis. Mulligan was a little less active after the big band broke up but he toured extensively with the Dave Brubeck Quartet (1968-72), had a part-time big band in the 1970s (the Age of Steam), doubled on soprano for a period, led a mid-'70s sextet that included vibraphonist Dave Samuels, and in 1986 jammed on a record with Scott Hamilton. In the 1990s he toured the world with his excellent "no-name" quartet and led a "Rebirth of the Cool Band" that performed and recorded remakes of the Miles Davis Nonet classics. Up until the end, Gerry Mulligan was always eager to play. Gerry Mulligan died on January 20th, 1996 in Darien, CT. Among Mulligan's compositions were "Walkin' Shoes," "Line for Lyons," "Bark for Barksdale," "Nights at the Turntable," "Utter Chaos," "Soft Shoe," "Bernie's Tune," "Blueport," "Song for Strayhorn," "Song for an Unfinished Woman" and "I Never Was a Young Man" (which he often sang). He recorded extensively through the years for such labels as Prestige, Pacific Jazz, Capitol, Vogue, EmArcy, Columbia, Verve, Milestone, United Artists, Philips, Limelight, A&M, CTI, Chiaroscuro, Who's Who, DRG, Concord and GRP. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Joàn Chavez - bass; Noël Lardon - drums; Philipp Wisser - guitar >>>>>>> Blind Spot creates music out of an attitude that questions everything. „We don't know anything, but as soon as we pick up our instruments, a small spark ignites. It is vulnerable at first and needs attention, otherwise it will fade away immediately and we will be left in the dark again. But if we pay attention to the spark, it starts to blaze and then we are ready“. This examination requires dedication, but no taboos and therefore also explains in a broader sense how Blind Spot has created an album with “Frontmirror” that covers an enormous range despite the classic trio setting. Modern and in part randomly controlled effects experiments fit seamlessly into earthy rock and blues sounds. Musically, Blind Spot revolve around clear, catchy themes on “Frontmirror”. They modulate, modify, stumble, fall and lift each other up. This creates a lively interplay of electric guitar, double bass and drums. Due to the variety of sounds, the simple melodies are transformed into complex constructs and get more and more dimensions.

Duncan Eagles – saxophones; Max Luthert – double bass; Eric Ford – drums >>>>>>> “Anniversary Song” is the fifth album from the trio known as Partikel and represents a celebration of their ten years together as a group. They’ve actually been together since 2009 and the music on this album was originally written in 2019 but Covid restrictions then delayed its recording until August 2021. The album was well received by fans and critics alike and a definite ‘buzz’ quickly developed around Partikel. “Anniversary Song” is a fitting celebration of Partikel’s first decade of music making. The group’s distinctive approach to the art of the saxophone trio has delivered some excellent music, whether from the core trio or from the numerous augmented line ups. But it’s the playing of the core trio that is at the heart of Partikel’s music with all three musicians delivering an impressive blend of power and lyricism and combining to produce a group sound that is both exploratory and innately melodic. Individually each musician has a highly distinctive musical voice, but it’s probably fair to say that the whole is even more impressive than the individual components. Like most jazz musicians Eagles, Luthert and Ford are also involved with numerous other projects and each has made excellent music elsewhere. But when they do come back together to work as Partikel the results are very special. The story continues. ~ thejazzmann.com

Most of the tunes selected come right from the pop vernacular of the day. They range from a barnburning read of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's theme for "Jesus Christ Superstar" and a dirty funk approach to Carole King's "I Feel the Earth Move" to a provocative and spacy cover of Procol Harum's "Conquistador" that feels like the horn chart for Chicago's "25 or 6 to 4" wedded to Mason Williams' "Classical Gas" trumped by Stan Kenton in the mid-'50s. While the description may read atrociously, sonically and aesthetically the set comes off far better. Ellis incorporated inventive, in-your-face, swaggering arrangements into his hearing and execution of pop's possibilities in the jazz world of the early '70s. Most of the tracks are short, with only a big-band freakout read of Hank Levy's "Chain Reaction" going over the five-minute mark. This, along with the disc's opener (a fine cover of Joe Sample's "Put It Where You Want It") and Ellis' own "Theme from The French Connection" (a surprise hit for him) work well as modern creative big band offerings. There are some really embarrassing moments here as well. Gilbert O'Sullivan's "Alone Again (Naturally)" was utterly unnecessary and is pure schlock; likewise the "jazz on Quaaludes" take on the Carpenters' "Goodbye to Love." "Lean On Me" (the soul classic written by Bill Withers) is simply surreal, as is the cover of Yes' "Roundabout." Ellis devotees will no doubt delight in Connection because of its abundance of sass, humor, and imagination, while jazz purists will shake their heads in disgust and others will greet the album with mix of curious bewilderment, a good-natured (hopefully) chuckle, and a perverse kind of glee. ~ Thom Jurek

Intuitive contemplation; energetic extroversion and gentle moments of solitude; wildness and flexibility – just like water’s many facets. The trio’s music is a colorful combination of various influences. They always search for balance: from traditional to more contemporary approaches; from art pop music nuances, to the eastern musical heritage – Bulgarian, Taiwanese, Carnatic and Italian traditional music, an object of exploration in the musical odysseys of all three musicians.
